Press Release
September 6, 2001
For immediate
release
Indianapolis, IN - Indiana Right to Life today called on Planned
Parenthood of Indiana to tell women the truth that so-called "emergency
contraception" may cause an early abortion if conception has
occurred. "The term 'emergency contraception' implies that
this drug is not an abortifacient. This is simply untrue,"
stated executive director Mike Fichter. "A true contraceptive
works to prevent conception. The drug offered by Planned Parenthood
to rape victims will cause an early abortion if conception has already
occurred." Victims who refuse the abortifacient could be referred
to the scores of pro-life pregnancy resource centers throughout
Indiana that offer free and confidential assistance.
Indiana Right
to Life made its announcement today in the wake of Planned Parenthood
of Indiana's press release offering free "emergency contraception"
to rape victims.
In addition,
Indiana Right to Life is calling for requirements that Planned Parenthood
notify law enforcement officials when approached by a rape victim.
"A woman who has suffered from rape does not need to be told
that an abortifacient drug will solve her problems," noted
Fichter. "It is imperative that law enforcement officials be
notified immediately in order that a complete report is made and
the perpetrator of the crime apprehended. Let's punish the criminal,
not the innocent life created as a result of the criminal's violent
act."
